This post may contain affiliate links. My daughter decided it was time to transition to a more of a "big girl" room and she wanted to do a mermaid / beach theme. Her room is upstairs and has many slanted walls, so decorating was pretty tricky. The one thing she did want was a "huge mermaid on my wall!" Of course she did. We looked at some of our local stores, but weren't able to find exactly what she wanted. But really, I think deep down, she knew I'd find a way to make her one. And I did! You will need: light weight hardboard 1/4" thick sandpaper jig saw a picture of an image or a printer to print an image projector picture hangers hot glue gun acrylic paints clear acrylic spray sealer We used the hardboard that has one side white since that was what color she wanted her mermaid to be and it was going to save me a step. Otherwise, grab the plain brown hardboard and you can paint it when you are all done. Print off a small sized image so that it will nicely fit in your projector. Position your board against a wall where you will be able to easily trace your projected image onto your hardboard. Set up your projector and adjust it until your image is sized how you want it. Then using a pencil, trace the image onto your MDF board. When you have your image traced, use your jigsaw to trace out your entire image. When your image is cut out, use some sandpaper to lightly go around all of the edges of your board to smooth them out a bit and remove any rough cuts. Then find the center of your image (or in my case each side) and hot glue your picture hanger onto the MDF board. I marked my spots with a pencil, then added a glob of glue and placed the hanger in place. Once the glue had dried, I added some more glue to go over top the hanger to make sure it was nice and secure to the board. The nice thing about using MDF board is that it is very light and easy to hang a large item this way. We also made a few more images to go along with her beach theme: I used a yardstick and a permanent market to make the lines on the seashell to give it a bit more details. do it yourself |
