This was a really fun and easy craft to do, especially with older kids.  I had a few well won hats that were ready to be tossed, but thought I'd try this first to save them from the landfill and I am glad I did.  They are like having brand new hats.  And no, my finished hat is not hard and stiff.  You can feel that there is a "coating" on it, but it does not affect me or the hat at all.

What you'll need:

canvas hat
assortment of spray paint
an old bucket for water
gloves
masking or painters tape (optional)

Start by looking over your hat and decide if there are spots you'd like to keep from getting the paint on.  I taped over the back strap and buckle area because I didn't want the paint to interfer with adjusting the size.  Use your masking or painters tape to completely cover those areas.

Put on your gloves and then fill up your bucket about 3/4 of the way with water.  Choose which spray paint colors you would like to use and take turns spraying them into the water.  I would spray a large area of one color and then aim my next color into the inside of that circle.  Continue on like this until you have most of the top surface of the water filled with the colors that you want.  With hydro dipping, it is hard to guarantee what the finished item will look like.  If you are nervous, practice on something first, like an old cup or water bottle.

When you are ready, slowly submerge your item into the paint so that the paint begins to wrap around the entire area you want colored.  I placed my into the water upside down and slowly turned it into the paint until it was completely covered.  When you have the item covered, use one of your hands to "wipe" away the excess paint from the hat and then remove the hat from the water.  Then set it somewhere for it to dry.
